According to Eurostat, the age media was 30.5 years old in 2020, thus ranking Kosovo first in Europe for our population.

After Kosovo, Turkey is in second place at 32.4, Iceland at 36.5 years of age, and in fourth place Albania is ranked 37.2.

In the region, the oldest-age population is in Serbia (43.9), while other countries like Montenegro and Northern Macedonia are approaching the 40-year-old border.

In Europe, the oldest populations, according to Eurostat, are Italy, with half the population under 47.2 years of age and Germany (45.9), followed by Portugal (45.5).

According to Eurostat, by 2020 the average age of the EU population was 43.9 years. Compared to 2001 (the first reference year for which there is information), the average age rose by more than 5 years (from 38.4 years).

In 2020, most of the capital's regions in the EU registered relatively new populations, but the French Mayotte region registered, so far, the average age (17.7). This was followed by another French region, Guyane (26.1 years), and the Spanish region of Ciudad Autónoma de Melilla (34.4 years).

On the other hand, the highest average was registered at Chemnitz in Germany (52.0 years), followed by the Italian region of Liguria (51.4 years) and 4 other regions in Germany: Sachsen-Anhalt (51.2 years), Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (two 50.5 years) and Thürringen (50.3 years).

Even Albania is aging rapidly

Although it is one of Europe's newest population, Albania is rapidly aging. Eurostat data shows the age of media in 2010 was 31.9.

Other data from INSTAT shows that even in 2021 this tendency has continued. Age media reached 37.6 years of age in 2021, increasing by 4 months over a year, INSTAT reported.

Albania's age media has been put on an increase trend, reflecting demographic developments that are favouring aging of the country at a rapid rate.

Age media begins growth after 1979. This year, according to INSTAT population media data, was 20 years old. From 1979 to 2021, media age has increased by 17.6 years. INSTAT projections for the years to come indicate further population aging. By 2060 the age of media is expected to be over 50 years.

Previous INSTAT studies explain growing media age with three main factors. The first decline in the number of births rapidly reducing the new population. Second, the migration that in Albania is a feature of new ages is producing population contractions below 30 years of age. The third reason is related to increasing life expectancy, which naturally leads to increased older populations. /Monitor/
