Kosovars, mostly Swiss passports after EU citizens

According to the Lustat Cantonal Statistics Office, the level of presence of foreigners is 19 percent, well below the Swiss average (25.5 percent), writes Louzerner Zeitung

Since 1990, the number of permanent foreigners standing in the canton has more than doubled (79,215) (+ 42,681 persons). The percentage of foreigners has increased from 11.3 per cent to 19.0 per cent in the same period and is still well below the Swiss average. The latter has increased from 16.7 to 25.5 percent in the same period.

In 2020, 1,186 foreigners in Lucerni canton have been naturalized, 34 more than a year ago. According to Lustat, citizens from the European Union are most often naturalized (EU27: 560 people), most of them Germans (335 persons) and Italians (70 people). Comparatively often, or mostly in “competition” with foreigners of countries outside the EU, Swiss citizenship has taken people from Kosovo (199 people).

Largest Foreign Group Comes From Germany

82.3 percent of all foreigners living in Lucerne canton come from Europe. 57.2 percent of these come from a European Union member state (BE27).

According to nationality, 14,267 German citizens represent the largest group (18.0 percent), followed by people from Italy (10.6 percent), Kosovo (10.2 percent), Portugal (9.5 percent), and Serbia (4.8 percent). Generally, foreigners living in Lucerni canton come from 168 different countries.

According to Lustat, the percentage of foreigners differ greatly from the region to the region. It is often higher in urban regions than in rural areas, contains albinfo.ch. With a rate of 36.0 percent, the Emmen municipality has the highest share of foreigners in Lucerni Canton.

The lowest percentage of foreigners is in the Romos municipality by 3.0 per cent.
