France has published a list of sanctions that would go into effect by November 2nd, unless sufficient progress is noted over the post- Brex fishing rights dispute and said it is working on a second set of sanctions that could affect Britain's electricity supply.
The British government said <x0 threats are disappointing and disproportionate” and that it will seek urgent clarification before considering measures in response, Reuters writes.
Through a joint statement, the Ministry of the Sea and the Ministry of European Affairs in France said this country could add border and sanitation controls to goods from Britain, prevent British boats from accessing certain French ports, and increase controls on trucks coming from Britain and heading towards Britain.
A second round of measures is being prepared. France does not rule out revising the electricity supply it makes to the United Kingdom”, the statement further states.
French government spokesman Gabriel Attal said French fishermen lack half the permits needed in British waters and, according to Paris, the United Kingdom owes them after Brex.
Our <x0wer is approaching its” borders, said Attal, which has stressed that Britain's supply of electricity from France may be among the measures to be exploited as sanctions.
A British government spokesman reacted to France's moves, saying: France's “threats are disappointing and disproportionate, not expected by a close ally and partner. ”
The measures we are threatened with do not appear to be in line with the Trade and Co-operation Agreement and the broader international law, and, if implemented, they will face adequate and calibrated response”, he added.
