US representation in Turkey on Monday afternoon (25.10) published a declaration on Twitter respecting the Vienna Convention. “Our goal was not to cause a crisis”, Erdogan further expressed himself. We were meant to protect Turkey's sovereignty rights.
The head of state Erdogan at the weekend triggered a scandal when he declared that ten Western ambassadors would announce unwanted persons from protests against their declaration of solidarity with entrepreneur and culture supporter Osman Cavala, who is held in prison. With the announcement of the person non grata usually follows the expulsion of persons from the country. Touched by this stance were German Ambassador Jürgen Schulz and his colleagues from France, the US and seven other countries.
64-year-old Cavala has been in investigative custody in Istanbul since 2017, though the European Court of Human Rights has instructed its release in 2019. Cavala manages one of the largest publishing houses in Turkey and engages with his organisation Anadolu Kültür for dialogue with ethnic groups, as well as in the conflict with Kurds or Armenia. He is also the founder of the Turkish branch of the US Open philanthropist Society Foundation George Soros, which is targeted by many populists.
