The U.S. Geological service said that the quake's epidre was about 100km west of the province's capital, Kueta, near the border with Afghanistan.
The town of Harnai coal mines in the province of Baluchistan suffered the worst blow from the earthquake, which destroyed 100 mud - built houses, blocking inside many of the inhabitants who were sleeping. TV footage showed people fleeing their homes in panic. Authorities say most victims are women and children, the Oranews reports.
Officials said it will take time to reach many of the most hit areas in the coal mining region. The Pakistani army said its troops and helicopters were assisting civil authorities in rescue efforts.
Power cuts forced rescue workers to use flashlights to treat the injured in hospitals.
Authorities said powerful quakes caused mud slides in two locations on the main highway, linking Kueta and Harna.
