The global number of reported cases and deaths by COVID-19 is growing for the first time in two months, prompted by a steady rise in Europe. It's another reminder that COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. One of the main reasons the pandemic is continuing is the uneven approach to mechanisms to combat it,” he said, demanding a more just distribution of vaccines.
Low-income countries make up 9 percent of the world's population, but only 0.5 percent of the world's administered vaccines are done in those countries, according to WHO.
WHO's leading expert, Soumya Swaminathan, said she hoped G-20 countries leaders meeting in Rome this weekend would give priority to vaccine supplies for countries that need them most.
“Today, the number of intensive doses that are being administered worldwide -- approximately one million injections a day -- is triple the amount of vaccines administered in low income countries, which is about 330,000 doses a day”, she said.
