The 37-year-old from Denmark was arrested Wednesday after firing arrows at 4 women and 1 men aged 50 to 70 in a supermarket in the Norwegian city of Kongsberg.
On Thursday, Norway's flag was lowered to half-staff as the city square was filled with flowers in memory of the victims.
It is reported that the author had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for some time now.
His family had also received protection orders after 37-year-olds earlier threatened him with murder.
Prosecutors have demanded that the suspect be kept in solitary confinement, but he can avoid imprisonment if psychiatrists think of him mentally ill.
The crime suspect was a Danish citizen and a Muslim believer with radical conviction, so police have not ruled out his attack as terrorist motives.
