Former American ambassador: US continues to encourage states to recognise Kosovo

Former American Ambassador to Belgrade Cameron Munter believes that Belgrade has not recognised Kosovo's independence prevents Serbia from taking its rightful place in Europe and, he says, building a peaceful and promotional future for its citizens. Munter adds that the United States has encouraged countries [...]
Munter adds that the United States has encouraged other countries that have not recognised Kosovo to do so since 2008, and stresses that “The US is trying to work closely with their European allies in resolving the Kosovo issue”.
Responding to Tanjug's question whether and how the United States are putting pressure on countries, especially EU members, who have not recognised Kosovo to do so, Munter says:
“I suppose the United States continues to do so, especially in agreement with most EU countries that also recognise Kosovo”, Munter said.
Asked whether he expects a new US envoy to be appointed soon for the Pristina-Belgrade dialogue, and if that means the US will become more involved in dialogue, Munter said the envoy would focus more on concrete proposals for reforms in the Balkans.
“I would focus more on concrete reform proposals in the Balkans, resolving the heated issues of governance and economic development than on institutional initiatives”, said Munter, who currently heads the US Eastern West Institute.
Commenting on what remains of Washington's agreement signed in September 2020 and how binding it is for the Joe Biden administration, Munter believes the agreement was planned and executed poorly from the start.
This happened mainly for the internal American political goals, given the serious foreign policy goals”, he believes.
