Navalny was elected by members of the European Parliament during a plenary session in Strasbourg.
He was nominated along with Bolivian politician Jeanie Anez and Afghan women, who are well-known human rights activists.
Navalny, Russian President Vladimir Putin's most famous enemy, was imprisoned this year after returning to Russia from Germany, where he was cured of poisoning with nervous agents, which he accuses the Kremlin.
The prize is worth 50,000 euros and will then be given, on December 15th, during a session of the European Parliament.
