The US Supreme Court gave the green light to the Justice Department to carry out the first execution of a death sentence in nearly seventy years.
Shortly after the decision, the Federal Office of Prisons executed Lisa Montgomery, revoteing the temporary suspension imposed several days ago.
Montgomery was sentenced to death in 2007 for the robbery and drowning of Bobbie Jo Steinnet in 2004, which was then 8 months pregnant. Montgomery then wanted to rob the baby, which thankfully survived the attack, and today he is 16 years old and lives with his father.
The 52-year-old lawyers said the sexual abuse she suffered in childhood led to “brain damage and serious mental illness”.
According to US Bureau of Prisons data, the last woman executed by the US government was Bonnie Brown Heady on December 18, 1953, who was also convicted of kidnapping and murder.
