The head of the Kremlin was immersed in ice - covered water while the temperature marked - 20 degrees Celsius.
Speaking to reporters, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Fisherov said the Russian president remained loyal to tradition, since water blessed by a clergyman is considered holy and clean until next year's holiday, and is believed to have powers of protection and healing.
Russian Orthodox Christians attend the old calendar and celebrate the Epiphany on January 19th, twelve days after Christmas, which is celebrated on January 7th.
According to tradition, believers must dive three times into the icy waters, in special places for this ritual.
