The US Senate approved President Joe Biden's candidate for the post of treasury secretary Monday. Janet Yellen, who becomes the 76th chief in the country's history to take the lead in this institution, is the first woman in this role.
The Senate has voted 84 votes for 15 against Yellen's confirmation, which according to US President Joe Biden, will commit to stabilising the American economy while facing the worst crisis in decades.
Yellen is well-known in Washington, after serving as the first woman at the helm of the Federal Reserve, and as the leader of economic advisers at the White House Council.
As a top priority, Yelen, 74, is expected to have the drafting of economic policies, as the United States faces the pandemic of coronary.
Among Beden's plans is the approval in Congress of the aid package worth $1.9 trillion.
This package aims to raise the funds for vaccination, add $400 more as a weekly benefit to Americans who have lost jobs, and to provide ready $1,400 for most people.
The Biden administration believes additional funds are needed to prevent the spiral crash of the economy.
Biden himself has said that negotiations with the Republicans in Congress could last for two more weeks.
