Stephanie Grisham resigned as head of the first lady's cabinet after President Donald Trump's supporters broke into the U.S. Capitol in an effort not to allow Congress to determine the results of the presidential election.
It was an honor to serve the country at the White House. I am very proud to be part of Mrs. Trump's mission to help children everywhere, and proud of the many achievements of this administration,” said Grisham in a statement.
Grisham, who was for a year the White House press secretary before becoming head of the First Lady's staff, did not say whether her resignation was in response to violence in the country's capital, but a source known to her decision said the violence convinced her ultimately about it.
Even the Socie secretary of the White House, Ricky Niceta, resigned, as did a White House deputy press secretary, Sarah Matthews, said two sources for Reuters.
O'Brien was also considering resigning, as was Pottinger, deputy national security adviser who has been a key voice for politics towards China within the administration, said two sources.
“I just spoke to Vice President Pence,” said O'Brien in a statement earlier Wednesday, adding, “I'm proud to serve with him. ”
Inside the White House, there were also rumours that Deputy Chief of Staff Chris Liddell could resign, according to a source.
The White House refused to comment.
Numerous injuries were announced and a woman lost her life in the Capitol violence, while Trump's supporters responded to the president's call to protest his loss in November's presidential election to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump has repeatedly and groundless claims that the elections were accompanied by manipulations. /voa/
