Republicans call for postponement of trial against former President Trump

Republicans in the US Senate urged the Democrats to postpone the start of the trial against former President Donald Trump by mid-February to give his lawyers time to prepare a defence against charges of inciting violent protest. The move came after the Democrats earlier in the day said the House of Representatives could send the charges Friday to the Senate, which were adopted last week in response to the deadly attack on Capitol by former President Trump's supporters.
Former Republican President Donald Trump left the office Wednesday and travelled to Florida, hours before Democrat Joe Biden was sworn in.
Republican minority leader in Senate Mitch McConnell urged the Democrats to wait until January 28th for the submission of charges to deliver Trump two weeks to prepare his legal protection. The office of majority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, did not immediately answer a question about Senator McConnell's proposal.
The Democrats control the Senate with the narrowest possible advantage, based on Vice President Kamala Harris' vote to break equal voting of the 50-50 votes, and also need the republican co-operation to advance many elements of President Biden's agenda, as well as to confirm the appointments for his Cabinet.
Trump is the only American president to whom charges have been filed twice, and his trial in the Senate will be the only one that ever occurred after a president has left office.
