The quake struck at a depth of 10km, said the German Geeshkens Research Centre, with its 40km-high-high-high-ranged focal point south of the province of San Juan.
Social media posts showed many homes and trembling buildings, leaving cracks in the streets as bottles of glass fell from shelves to shops.
San Juan Governor Sergio Uñac called on people to remain calm after the earthquake.
No warning for the tsunami was issued, said the US Warning System for Tsunami, Reuters.
