The change in Slovakia's stance regarding the recognition of the state of Kosovo has promised European Emisari for dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, who for years was minister of Slovak foreign affairs.
The EU's special envoy, however, is linking this to the agreement Kosovo must reach with Serbia, the Kosovo Clan follows.
” Let me speak not as a facilitator of dialogue but as former minister of foreign affairs of Slovakia. I've been asked many times when Slovakia will accept it, Kosovo. I answer to you first give me good news. With this I can go to the Parliament of my country and say the time has come to reconsider our position against this issue. The good news is the agreement itself with Serbia for normalising relations”, Lajcak said
Besides Slovakia, there are four other European Union member states that have 27 member states that do not recognise Kosovo's independence.
They are Greece, Spain, Romania and Cyprus.
I am in regular contact with non-recognising countries, as well as with all other European Union member states. I can't speak on their behalf, but I'm getting signals that they are conveying the process closely and carefully. They tell me what's good for Serbia is good for us too. We will not be at odds with Serbia's position. That is why this process is more than normalising relations between Serbia and Kosovo. Here is the real opening of the European perspective for Kosovo”.
These comments by the Union, which facilitates Kosovo-Serbian talks, were made during an online debate hosting Germany's ambassador to the United States, Emily Haber.
