Prime Minister Edi Rama has held a press conference before the start of the vaccine.
He said the doses to be used today have been given to Albania by a friendly country within the EU.
Rama said it is not Greece and that it is not authorised to say the name.
“We have achieved in relatively light conditions to guarantee the first 500 thousand Pfizer files, but also to ensure the beginning of the vaccine before the deadline thanks to bilateral relations that, as I have said, are key to this strange process. Actually, the strategy and direction established by the European Union to invest in COVAX's scheme has resulted in a still-to-day discussion of an undefined direction on time. So, despite our commitment to Albania's COVAX and countries outside the EU, if we were to stay in expectation, we would still be pending, and it is not known how long that wait would last.
We're engaged intensively with other channels. We've managed to contact the Pfizer live in New York. At the same time, we have opened four other bilateral channels in four countries. And the vaccine today is the result of one of the EU countries that I am not authorized to name. It's not Greece”, Rama said, adding:
This is a job that develops as a scholarship, but what matters is that there is no price increase. But using our diplomatic capacities and the ability to influence certain relationships and the respect created on partners we have managed to secure the first doses. It's a fact that in a begging race for their countries I'm the President for first place”.
