The nationwide measures, including the closure of schools and non-moral businesses, were undertaken in mid-December and were expected to continue until January 10th.
On Tuesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with leaders of 16 countries, with whom she agreed on new limits that would reduce contact between people.
These include limiting the movement of residents to regions with high rates of coronary infection to a distance of just 15km from their homes.
The “The measures we've approved are drastic. They are tougher”, Merkel said after the meeting.
The leaders also agreed on new restrictions at private gatherings.
People will be allowed to meet only one person from another family.
So far they have been able to meet up to five people of both families.
Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller acknowledged that the measures are serious “for many”.
But, he said the burden being imposed by the coronary pandemic on hospitals and intensive care units remains high.
According to Johns Hopkins University figures, Germany recorded over 1.8 million cases of coronarys and over 36,000 victims, since pandemics started in the spring of last year.
