German authorities have also formally recommended that the Astra-Zeneca vaccine v. Covid-19 not be used in people over 65.
A statement by the Institute of Robert Koch's Permanent Vaccinate Committee, Germany's leading public health service, said: “does not currently have enough data to determine how effective vaccine is for those over 65x1>.
For this reason, the committee recommended that it be used only for people between the ages of 18 and 64.
RKI said both vaccines, approved by EU authorities, by BioNTech / Pfizer and Modernna were considered “equivalent in terms of security and efficiency”.
The German vaccination committee's decision was preceded by two articles in German newspapers Bild and Handelsblatt, which wrote that the German government had doubts about the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine vs. Coronavirus in adults over 65.
Citing British scientists and German government sources, the two newspapers wrote that the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine over the age of 65 is only 8%.
However, the British pharmaceutical industry has defended the effectiveness of the vaccine on people over 65 years of age, rejecting reports in German media and insisting that its effectiveness is 100%.
