Several hundred farmers have protested between barricades and tear gas to enter Delhi on the Day of the Republic of India.
Tens of thousands of them entered the city with tractors to protest new market-friendly reforms.
In some places, farmers broke barricades and deviated from the path they had agreed with the police.
Tuesday's protest is the latest episode from several months' protests, one of the longest India has seen run by farmers.
The government has offered to impose pending laws, but farmers say they will accept nothing but a abolition.
Police agreed to allow Tuesday's rally after several rounds of talks, provided it does not interrupt the annual Republican Day parade.
Tuesday's rally was expected to begin with six entry points in Delhi, and police blocked all of them and gave farmers specific routes for their rally. Roads included roads on the outskirts of the city.
Farm groups on three different borders -- Singhu, Tikri and Gazipur -- broke out barricades and started marching in the city, on foot and tractors, the BBC reports.
