Portugal today takes over the six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union from Germany.
Under the “Time to provide: a fair, green and digital regeneration”, during its presidency Portugal plans to focus on implementing the goals of the multibillion-euro aid package against the European Union's Codvid-19.
“It is an honour and a great responsibility to take the lead from Germany, and Chancellor Angela Merkel”, Portugal Prime Minister Antonio Costa wrote on Twitter.
This is the fourth time the country takes over the rotating presidency of the European Union Council.
Some difficult challenges are expected this time, including addressing the consequences of pandemic.
The vaccine campaign across Europe and the implementation of the EU's aid package with its ambitious goals are top priorities, as well as any issues caused by the end of the transition period following Great Britain's departure from the European Union, though Brussels and London agreed to a trade agreement.
Portugal will also address the European Commission's proposal for a common migration policy.
” A further focus will be strengthening the bloc's relationship with Africa”, according to Portuguese officials.
After Portugal, Slovenia will assume this presidency.
