A large contingent of National Guard troops arrived in the American capital in response to the appeal of defence officials to ensure security during the new president's inauguration ceremony.
The country's military leaders called for repeated calls from Thursday and then Friday for assistance from individual troops of the guard, while having information from the rule agencies that there are plans for violent protests.
Governors replied in various forms: Some refused to send troops, others sent dozens of forces, but there were also states that sent a thousand soldiers to the guard.
The FBI and other federal agencies have sounded the alarm that there may be attempts to sabotage or disrupt the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Joe Biden, from the arrival of armed protesters to the deployment of explosives.
By the day of inauguration, over 25,000 National Guard troops are expected to have been deployed in Washington.
Meanwhile, today a number of state capitals have been prepared for protests by supporters of President Trump, who do not recognise Biden's victory and insist the elections were stolen, writes VOA.
Over 10 states have activated troops of the National Guard to protect the headquarters of state legislatures, where protesters are expected to gather. Activists of the anti-government movement “bogaloo” have announced plans for protests in the 50 American states. Many countries have built protective barriers around institutional objects, while Texas and Kentucky have completely closed the perimeter around their legislature. There were sporadic protests in various states Saturday, but without security challenges near state buildings.
On Wednesday, Joe Biden is sworn in as 46th president of the United States, in an unprecedented atmosphere under extraordinary security measures in response to concerns of violent protests and in the absence of festive activities as a result of corruption.
