Thousands of people have been detained throughout Russia, following protests in which calls for the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, while police have tried to violently suppress those considered the biggest anti-government protests in the country in recent years.
Over 3 000 arrests were reported Saturday from Siberia to Moscow, 1,200 of them only in Moscow, according to the O organisation. VD-Info monitoring political bans, as thousands more demonstrated at low temperatures - 50 degrees Celsius.
Among those arrested was Navalny's wife, Yulia, who had joined the crowds in the capital. She originally posted an Instagram in the crowd, and later another from inside a police van.
Navalny was imprisoned last weekend when he arrived in Moscow after returning from Germany, where he was treated after poisoning the nervous agent, Novicok.
It has not yet become clear what effect protests on January 23rd will have on Russian President Vladimir Putin's Government, which continues to have support from the people.
In the constitutional changes made last year, Putin was potentially enabled to stay in power until 2036.
The appearance of tens of thousands of people in protest by Moscow and Vladivostok has shown people's interest in the Navajo anti-corruption campaign.
