Klass joined the Oregon National Guard in January 2019 and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, the 162nd Infantry Regiment, Springfield-based Ore-based 41st Infantry Brigade.
He was serving with the peacekeeping mission of NATO's Joint Operation Guardian in Kosovo and was due to return home in November.
