Analysts Weber and Serer: US and EU end Kosovo- Serbia

Senator Joe Biden's speech in 1991 at the U.S. Congress to end the Kosovo crime again thrilled Albanians when he was put to the head of the state considered their strongest ally. Doubts that arose over America's support to Kosovo as if they disappeared with the choice of [...]

Doubts that arose over America's support to Kosovo have disappeared with his election of president, while expectations are increasing for the problem with Serbia to be resolved permanently without damaging the country's sovereignty and integrity.

Two leading analysts -- one in the US and the other in the EU -- are agreeing to that.

Daniel Serwer, professor at the University of “John Hopkins”, in an interview for Clankosova. tv has said it expects the US and the EU to be tandim that will seal reconciliation between Kosovars and Serbs.

“I expect President Joe Biden to try, along with the EU, for Belgrade and Pristina to reach a comprehensive solution to their unresolved questions”.

As American, at this point German Bodo Weber thinks, he said he definitely expects the new US administration to give priority to Kosovo-Serbia dialogue in co-operation with the EU. He even expressed happiness that an administration that performed the dangerous “” in this case finally fled.

“The very dangerous performance of former envoy Grenelli drew the attention of the Biden team on the Kosovo- Serbia even during the campaign. I expect the Biden administration to return, as in the past, close transatlantic co-operation with the EU on the Kosovo issue- Serbia and this will ultimately enable a real restoration of negotiations for a final, comprehensive agreement, with the EU in its main role and the US in a strong support partnership” role, he said, Klan Kosova reports.

Analyst Weber has high expectations that the path that Beden will pursue in relation to Kosovo will be exactly what he followed in the 1990s.

“Presist that the policy of Biden and his administration is in line with that of former, democratic and republican administrations, given the support it had in the past for Kosovo's independence as the only real way for the sustainable resolution of the Kosovo-Serbia dispute and in the protection of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

On the other hand, Serwer says he believes that Kosovo will be at its helm -- anyone who will not allow an agreement with Serbia that puts the country at risk, however -- recommends little compromise.

“I believe that any authority that is in power in Pristina will not be reconciled with a comprehensive solution that is not in Kosovo's overall interest, but compromise on non-moral issues is always part of a negotiated solution”.

The trilateral agreement between Kosovo, Serbia and the US on 4 September that was signed by former President Donald Trump received strong criticism in Kosovo, though the Hoti Government that signed it called it a major success of Kosovo.

Both analysts feel similarly about this deal, viewing it as not very good. Therefore, US incoming Secretary of State Antony Blinken's statement, who said he applauded the signed Trump agreements, raised concerns in them as well. But unlike Serwer, who said an agreement signed by a previous administration should be respected, Weber was more severe.

He's being nice. It wasn't much of a deal, but it's correct to welcome him”, Professor Serwer said.

Weber proposes that Biden exploit the goods of the agreement, while giving up the other points.

“I wish I could read a lot of Blinken's statement. This was said in the Senate from Blinken, aiming to receive support from the Democrats and Republicans. There will be no continuing approach to Green's bad policy, and leave with the territorial exchange. I expect the Biden administration to choose from Washington's non-binding documents what they can use in a constructive way and just ignore the rest of the”, Weber concluded.
