Ma, co-founder and former leader of the technological giant Alibaba, is no longer favored by China's leadership. In late October, he stood by top officials and gave a very critical speech to national regulators, as reported by angering China's president, Xi Jinping.
In the following months, regulators called Ma and other executives for questioning. The authorities had then launched anti-monopol investigations against Alibaba and its key composer, TenCent.

The final public presentation was on October 31, at an opening ceremony on a Double 11. In November, he was reported not to appear in the role of being a judge for the final episode of the African Business Heroes TV game.
Ma had been replaced with another Alibaba executive and his picture had disappeared from the website.
Bloomberg had reported that Ma had received a warning in early December not to leave the country.
