A decades-long conflict between Armenia and neighbouring Azerbaijan for Nagorni region - Karabah was reunited today, as both sides reported fierce fighting for controversial territory.
The mountainous region, which has a predominantly Armenian, Christian population, includes about 500 square miles [4,500 sq km], where Muslims live.
A war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which are both the former Soviet republic, began in 1988, as the local government of Karabah declared intentions to join Armenia, while the Soviet Union began to disintegrate.
The wars, initially among ethnic militias, intensified despite the Soviet government's outgoing efforts to restore peace with security forces.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, a widespread war erupted over the province.
About 30,000 people were killed before the war ended with a truce in 1994.
The deal was brokered by Russia and the predecessor of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSBE).
Nagorni-Karabah recovered from the war with a half-tonomic government protected by ethnic Armenian forces.
However, the region is officially recognised as part of Azerbaijan, according to the UN.
Tensions boiling over the region have escalated and resulted in violations of the 1994 ceasefire.
Today, the armies of Azerbaijan and Armenia reported fierce fighting in the region, the first time these measures were measured since the so - called <x0).
Authorities in Nagorni Karabah talked about the capital's major bombings, Stepanakert, and asked residents of 18 and older to prepare for action, while Armenia has imposed military law.
Both sides have accused each other of starting fighting.
Armenia is in the military alliance with Russia, while Azerbaijan has close ties with Turkey. Erdogan has already pledged support for Azerbaijan.
Meanwhile, European leaders and Pope Francisescu have called for an immediate end to fighting and returning to the negotiating table.
