Will there be other pandemics in the near future, answers Dr. Fauci

In an interview for “Der Spiegel”, Dr. Anthony Fauci, adviser to US President Donald Trump's pandemic, speaks of the anger of his opponents, his difficult relationship with the White House chief, mistakes made by the US during the effort to curb the spread of Ovid 19, and his cautious optimism that a vaccine will soon be available.

There's a conspiracy theory that you've created the choreography yourself, and that any kind of vaccine will kill millions of people. As the pandemic has promoted remarkable scientific research, it has also eroded trust in science. Is this an irreparable damage?

The damage is serious, but I hope it's not irreparable. Besides political divisions, we also have extremist opinions, including conspiracy theories, some of which are totally strange. There's such strong polarization that when I give recommendations on how we can reopen the country in a safe way, there are some people who disagree and start threatening me. So they physically threaten me, my children, my family, my wife. This is crazy.

Do you have any idea what epidemics will strike our planet in the future?

The only thing that's predictable in the pandemic is that they're going to happen. And the only thing that's totally unpredictable is what it's gonna be like. And I don't have the most vague idea of this at the moment. I hope it's not what we're going through right now.

So if we have another pandemic, and history tells us it's going to happen, I hope it's relatively not too heavy, and it can easily be controlled. But whatever it is, it won't be 10 years. Maybe we'll see each other a lot faster.
