An eyewitness has told Reuters that at least 100,000 protesters were in downtown Minsk.
A large number of police officers and soldiers are located in downtown Minsk, and many of them are blocking Independence Square and access roads.
Similar scenes were seen near the Palace of the Republic, a main government building.
Side roads are also full of police and soldiers. Protests are under way in Belarus for five weeks now for the controversial results of the presidential elections, which were won by Lukashenko with more than 80 per cent of the vote.
He has governed the country for a quarter century and is often called the last European dictator.
Human rights group Viasna claims there are many women among those arrested and that police violence was reported during the arrest.
Protesters put women in front of the crowd to be the face of demonstrations, hoping the authorities would be less brutal to them.
