One of the main issues in the transatlantic agenda is the seemingly unresolved dispute between Serbia and Kosovo, says Hodges, who is also an associate at the Centre for Policy Analysis, he told the Voice of America.
According to him, recent talks at the Oval Office between Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq and Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti with US President Donald Trump brought new hope that Belgrade and Pristina could reach a final agreement on the long-standing dispute.
Hodges determines three conditions he considers important in order to reach agreement.
The first “, that Washington should be constantly, and not engaged over and over. This further implies not only significant diplomatic movements but also prominent economic projects. Second, this process must be carried out in cooperation with our friends and allies. Personally, I hope that in the long term, we will work closely with our European friends. Third, the recent concrete agreement at the White House represents a step forward, but not the end of the dispute between Serbia and Kosovo. It is also necessary for Serbia and the European Union to reach mutually agreed criteria. Serbia, by the way, is entitled to meet what Europe expects “
The retired US general also emphasises the geopolitical importance of the Western Balkans, which borders on the more important strategic Black Sea region, Russia's backland.
