Police have arrested 289 protesters in Hong Kong today, who are opposing the delay in choosing the city's legislative council and a new national security law introduced by China.

Among those arrested are at least two prominent Hong Kong activists, the Civil Front for Human Rights Figo Chan, and longtime lawmaker and activist Leung Kwok.

Protesters called “Five requests, no less!” and asked the official Beijing to release 12 recently arrested activists who tried to flee to Taiwan by ship.

Police said calling for protest slogans is a violation of public order and epidemiological measures.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has postponed for a year the elections scheduled for September 6th for the legislature at the Asian financial centre, citing an increase in coronary cases as the reason for the delay. Hong Kong recorded 4,879 cases of infection, and 94 people died of disease.

The move was a blow to the pro-democracy opposition, which was hoping to win a historic majority in the council, with only half of the countries elected directly and half composed of already elected members supporting Beijing.

The elections would be the first official vote since a new national security law was established in the former British Colonel in June.

The Chinese government insists there was no political motive for the delay.
