Official results from Sunday's vote show that 58.2% of voters come in favour of initiative by union groups and left parties broadcast albinfo.ch. The cantonal government, as well as the centre's right and right, had recommended rejection of the proposal.
Supporters of the minimum wage say the goal is to reduce the number of poor people working and cannot afford prices in the Geneva region, known for the high cost of living. Opposers argue that wage levels should be negotiated between employers and employees without state intervention.
The generation is only the third of Switzerland's 26 cantons that have introduced a minimum wage, contains albinfo.ch. Early next year, Canton Ticino will also join the group.
Another vote on the issue is scheduled at Basel Canton (Baselstad) next year.
In 2014, Swiss voters overwhelmingly refused a proposal for a minimum wage across the country of 22 CHF an hour.
