At least 23 people were reportedly killed Sunday, in fighting between two Soviet republics for the Nagorno Karabakh region.
The region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan, but is controlled by ethnic Armenians.
In the early 1990 ' s, tens of thousands of people died in combat.
Tensions continue to be high today.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said he is sure he will regain control over Nagorno Karabaku.
“We are on the verge of a full-scale war in the South Caucasus”, Armenian Prime Minister Nicholl Pasinian warned, accusing Azerbaijan of planned aggression.
Both countries declared war conditions and mobilized armies.
The conflict in the Caucasus mountains has remained unresolved for over three decades, while there has been periodic fighting.
Analysts warn that intensifying violence could disturb markets, as the South Caucasus is a corridor for pipelines carrying oil and natural gas from the Caspian Sea to world markets.
Turkey's President, Recep Tayip Erdogan, voiced support for Azerbaijan, also urging the world to support this country in “the fight against occupation and cruelty” against it.
Azerbaijani are mostly Turkish people with whom Turkey has close ties.
Russia, traditionally viewed as Armenia's ally, called for immediate ceasefire and talks to stabilise the situation. /Rel
