Hundreds of others have reportedly been injured in the worst clashes since 2016 in the South Caucasus, a region offering key transit routes for gas and oil on the international market.

Tensions between the two states have risen for months in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, a enclave legally considered part of Azerbaijan but that has been governed by ethnic Armenians since declaring independence in 1991.

Armenia's defence minister reported on the fighting that took place on Sunday night, while the other side claimed Armenian forces were bombarding Terter's city, reports Guardian, translate Periscope.

Azerbaijani president announced the law on partial military mobilization.

Turkey has strong economic and cultural ties with Azerbaijan and has threatened that it will not remain neutral in this war. Russia, another regional power, is traditionally closer to Armenia but has also established ties with Azerbaijani elites in recent years. /Periscope
