In the US, 1,061,411 tests were conducted on Saturday, according to the COVID-19 Project, a voluntary initiative to monitor the spread of the infection.
A record number of tests were reached after the number of tests decreased for several days.
The US tested an average of 650,000 people a day until 13 September, most importantly at the end of July when more than 800,000 tests were conducted every day.
From the beginning of the pandemic, an insufficient number of available tests undermined efforts to curb the spread of the virus. In March, President Donald Trump said “anyone who wants to be tested will be tested”, but that goal has not yet been achieved.
