China Makes Proposals for UN Role in Inferno Age

The UN started with 51 signatories at the end of World War II and now included 193 countries. While celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment, this organisation and the multilatheralism it represents are facing unprecedented challenges, in terms of increased unilapalism and protectionism. Challenges have been compounded by COVID-19, which has affected more than 31 million people and claimed over 960,000,000 lives worldwide.
“For what kind of UN does the world need, and what role should it play in the postwar era? ”
These were the questions Chinese President Xi Jinping posed on Monday, when he spoke through a video connection at the summit to commemorate the UN's 75th anniversary. On these issues, he presented several proposals.
The UN must support justice because countries, regardless of their size, are equal and should respect each other, Xi said, stressing that this is a requirement of the time and principle most important in the UN Charter.
The organisation must engage in joint growth through consultations and co-operation, he stressed, urging countries around the world to maintain common security and share the fruits of development.
Xi urged increased representation and a stronger voice of developing countries in the UN, supporting the UN Charter's goals and principles.
He said the UN should promote international co-operation and lead efforts to solve the world's various problems, promote security, human rights development in a balanced way and give more emphasis to development in its global agenda.
“Over the 75 years of UN, the world has seen a rapid progress of human society, profound changes in international situations and rapid development of multilatheralism,”, the Chinese president said.
He reiterated China's commitment to multilateralism and determination to protect the international system with the UN at its core.
As the international community tries to find solutions to the problems facing humanity, “mulatralism” has been among the main words during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly that opened last week.
The top-level UN theme this year is “The future we want, the UN we need: Replaying our common commitment to multilatheralism”, echoing Xi's ongoing call to build a community of common future for mankind.
Meanwhile, 48 former UN and government officials from around the world last Friday published an open letter titled “Time for renovation: Call for a strengthened multilateral system”, voicing their hope that the UN will be transformed into a “much stronger, more responsible multilateral system and more inclusive”.
There is an urgent need for global leaders to understand clearly that we are at a turning point and we need to act decisively to protect and renew multi-latheralism”, they said, stressing that recovery from COVID-19 requires national leadership and effective global co-operation.
In his speech, Xi said the UN has passed one test after another in its 75-year history and has remained full of life. How the organization will pass the present test is important to the future of over seven billion people worldwide.
