Dramatic images indicate the moment of the powerful explosion and then the creation of a large smoke cloud that has covered much of the city.
Security sources reported to Reuters that the blast occurred near fireworks warehouses, though it is not clearly known what those warehouses were carrying.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese Army is on the ground immediately. The blast occurred prior to the verdict in a trial for the murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005.
A UN court would issue a lawsuit in the absence of four suspects in Rafik Harir's car assassination.
The four are members of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, which has consistently denied having been involved in Hariri's death.
The second unconfirmed blast was reported to be near Harrier's residence in the same town.
According to the AFP news agency, dozens of people have been injured.
