An explosion of salmonella related to onions has expanded to 43 US and Canadian states, causing a withdrawal from a producer in California and various food chains, health officials said.
According to foreign media, as of Sunday, there have been 640 cases of salmonella reported, including 85 hospital stays, linked to the explosion, the US Food and Bar Administration said.
Many of the reported cases were in the western states of Utah (90); Oregon (85); California (76); and Montana (52). There have also been 41 reported cases in Illinois.
Meanwhile, Canada's Public Health Agency reported 239 cases of 29 hospital stays since Friday.
No death was reported in Canada or the United States.
According to The New York Times, the American organisation identified the possible source of the explosion as red onions by Thomas International, a product supplier in Bakersfield, California, adding that an investigation has already begun.
Onions were reportedly distributed to wholesale merchants, restaurants and retail stores throughout the country and in Canada, Thomson said last week.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recommended that consumers throw out any onions or onions supplied by Thomason.
Health experts also say that onions be discarded or products containing them if consumers are not sure from whom they are supplied.
The disease, called salmonellosis, can continue for four to seven days, has said American CDC.
Children, older ones, and people with weaker immunity systems are more likely to develop serious diseases.
Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. Those who are seriously ill may also suffer a high fever, headaches, a frying, or bloody shit. /Telegraphy/
