Stanford University researchers have found the reason why some patients become seriously infected with COVID-19 and others do not.

Study published on page “Science” shares immunologic changes and errors in patient samples. These changes, according to researchers, distinguish between severe and average cases of infection.

The findings have shown that the main difference lies in how the mnemonic “system from birth” of patients responsible for detecting and removing harmful viruses and pathogens responds to the infection that causes COVID-19.

“These data show how the immune system changes during coronary infection, leading to certain diseases, and affecting potential health limits”, said research author Bali Pulandran, professor of pathology and microbiology at the School of Medicine at Stanford.

The study has researched the immune reactions of 76 people infected with coronarys and 69 other healthy people. Researchers have found that in patients with severe symptoms of COVID-19, most have increased levels of molecules that promote infection. Three of these molecules have proved to be linked to lung inflammation, as opposed to others, “but have not appeared before in COVID infection-19”. These three molecules and their receptors can represent therapeutic target in fighting COVID-19”, Pulandran said. “Scientists also found high levels of bacterial waste, such as bacterial DNA and cell wall materials, in the blood of patients with severe cases of COVID-19. The more remains, the more ill the patient was, and more pro-inflammatory substances circulated in his/her blood, said Stanford University's announcement.

The findings suggest that in the severe cases of COVID-19, bacterial products that usually appear in organs such as intestines, lungs, and throat can also go into the bloodstream, hitting the extended inflammation that is transmitted to all areas through the bloodstream.

Although often displayed in the harsh cases of COVID-19, the timing of the response of these cells is more recent and the effectiveness in fighting COVIDD-19 is worse than expected. These cells normally respond quickly and effectively to other viral components, such as the first “response of the immune system.

This leads researchers to wonder if the number of presence of these molecules differs from the average infection with COVIDD-19 from severe infections, and if blood cells don't produce molecules themselves, where do they come from?

Pulandran believes that they flow from tissue to other parts of the body, especially from the part of the infection íctor's lungs.

One of the great mysteries of COVID-19 infection has been that some people develop other diseases, while others seem to get over it very quickly, Pulandran said. We have some data now on why this is happening”.
