The US failed to ensure the extension of the UN arms embargo against Iran.
This increases the likelihood that Washington will seek to activate all previous sanctions against Tehran. State Secretary Mike Pompeo criticised the Security Council for failing to fulfil its mandate to preserve international peace and security.
The Council rejected a reasonable resolution to extend the 13-year embargo on Iran, paving the way for the main sponsor state of terrorism to buy and sell conventional weapons without restrictions for the first time in a decade,” said Pompeo through a statement.
Only the US and Dominican Republic voted in favour of the resolution. Russia and China voted against, another 11 members abstained.
