Two prisoners and 26 correctional officials infected with coronarys

So far two cases of prisoners have been confirmed with COVID-19. At the same time, there are 26 correctional officials who have been infected with this disease, with 12 still standing in self - isolation. As a result of increasing the number of cases with this pandemic, the Kosovo Correcting Service from July 11th has banned [...]

Thus reveals Kosovo Correspondent Service Director Nehat Thaci, who says that during this time prisoners will allow frequent phone calls with family and virtual communication through Skype, which is currently installed in some correctional and detention centres.

He says the situation is calm in all Kosovo prisons, however, according to him are facing various challenges.

So far we have managed to manage this situation very well, which has yielded results. This is due to cooperation, co-ordination, along with our native population. And they have shown a willingness to co-operate. Most of them largely, who have perceived or accepted a situation that reigns not only in Kosovo but across the globe”, he says.

From the beginning of the pandemic, prisoners have also engaged in the work of masks. Thaci thus vows to have had enough protective masks to prevent the spread of the coronary.

Unfortunately, although we had at one time allowed family visits, a very small number of close family members, we were forced to stop again... We ourselves produce masks so we have enough masks for our needs, except that we have received some donations we have produced for other institutions as well. A small symbolic contingent we have given to the Kosovo Police, and to the Police Inspectorate”, he has indicated.

Among other things, the leader of the Correcting Service reports that corrective officials are equipped with protective cloaks, since the residents are safe inside but not even during contact with the guards.

So far we have only two cases of infected prisoners. One of them was in prison but unfortunately he was in the room alone, and then it wasn't spread and it's been healed for a long time. And it's the second time he's been in a hospital prisoner, but he's been identified during his hospital stay. We don't have the indicators that that that person received from someone, or was infected with the Pec Hospital. That's why we only have two cases. The third case has been detained, but fortunately he has been identified before he arrives at the hospital in Gjilan. So we officially have only two cases, and the third was by order of the court, but it hasn't reached our”.

Currently there are 12 correctional officials who are standing in isolation themselves, the same have been confirmed with COVID-19.

From staff we have so far had 26 corrective officials infected, 12 of them still remain in self-isolation. There's not one of them because we've been communicating, there's no such thing as a serious health situation, but they're all self-aware. As government decisions on age, our person with health diseases, we've freed them from time, most of them are on vacation. Therefore, we are working with reduced staff in terms of managing this”, Thaci said in an interview for Kosovapress.

It shows there are operational difficulties in performing tasks as a cause of smaller numbers of corrective officials. However, according to him are re-managing these situations, and human resources. Currently in Kosovo are about 1,500 people imprisoned
