Hamad Hassan said the decision was taken under increasing pressure from citizens and some ministers who had warned they would resign.
“The entire government resigned,”, he told reporters at the end of a cabinet meeting.
He added that Prime Minister Hassan Diab will go to the presidential palace to replace “in the name of all ministers”.
The move came after two days of demonstrations in Beirut, where there were also clashes between protesters demanding the government's departure and security forces that responded with tear gas.
