Hungary has signed a declaration of intent to buy air defence missiles from the United States for about $1 billion.
The US Embassy in Budapest described the deal as the largest “Hungarian defence procurement from the US to the present time of”.
Hungary's Defence Ministry, a member NATO since 1999 said the deal includes the purchase of air-air and land-air missiles.
Last year, Prime Minister Viktor Orban unveiled government plans to buy American weapons and added that the “construction of a modern Hungarian army is under way”.
The Orban government has increased annual defence spending since 2015, following sharp spending cuts in the years following the 2008 World Economic Crisis.
In 2014, NATO members agreed to gradually increase defence spending so as to reach the level of two percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) in each country by 2024.
In the 2021 budget, Hungary has projected up to 778 billion euros (about 2.25 billion euros) for protection, which is about 1.66 percent of GDP.
