The European Union's executive has called on Turkey to dialogue and not take unilateral steps that would escalate tensions with Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The commission warned last week after the meeting of 27 union top diplomats that if the dialogue does not bear fruit, the EU has sanctions ready for Ankara.
Based on sources at the meeting, Brussels is expected to use the stick and carrot method to put the Turkish side on the table, where, in addition to punitive measures, it could propose a new customs union or more funding for meeting the refugee wave in the country.
Peter Stano, spokesman for European diplomacy, said Monday that the EU is clearly listed alongside Cyprus and Greece when it comes to their positions in front of Turkey.
“The start of dialogue is essential, of serious, honest dialogue that resolves all open issues. Only with negotiations is the enlargement of the situation and the way to stability and long-term solutions, which are so necessary for our reports with Turkey as neighbours and partners. ”
The eastern Mediterranean has turned into an area of tensions, as both Greece and Turkey have claims for water territories and rich gas and oil reserves hosting the region.
The sides have shown that they are ready to defend their interests at any cost, not excluding the use of force.
The most steadfast and threatening situation in this situation continues to present Ankara, as indicated Sunday by President Recep Tayip Erdogan's statement.
“Is the Greek people aware of what they expect because of its ambitious and incompetent rulers? Anyone who has faced us on land, on sea or in the air knows Turkey's determination to protect legitimate interests under international laws. Those who do not know will learn this reality on the field, on the table, or on international platforms. ”
Both Greece and Turkey have appealed allies for support, expressing open mediation.
Last Wednesday, Greece with France, Italy and the Greek Cypriot administration conducted military exercises on the south of the island of Crete, while the Turkish side closely accompanied the US fleet.
