82-year-old Juan Carlos announced his departure through a letter to his son Felipe, who surrendered power six years ago.
He said he would be available if prosecutors wanted to interview him.
In June, the Supreme Court of Spain launched an investigation into the suspicion of Juan Carlo's involvement in the contract for a railway project in Saudi Arabia.
It has not become clear when Carlos will leave Spain and where he will live from now on.
In 2014, Juan Carlos gave up power after nearly 40 years as king after a corruption investigation involving his groom and a controversial elephant hunting trip that the monarch made during the Spanish financial crisis.
