Great Britain has announced that it will help Beirut with five million pounds and that it will provide medical assistance and in seeking survivors, British Foreign Minister Dominique Rabb said today after talks with Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diabb.

“We will stay close to the people of Lebanon at the moment when necessary and provide an urgent five million pounds of aid, as well as professional medical assistance”, said Rabb, Reuters.

At least 113 people lost their lives in a devastating explosion at the port of Beirut, and more than 4,000 were injured.

The explosion at Beirut, the most powerful in its history, was caused by an artificial fertilizer seized by a Russian cargo ship six years ago, Lebanese media reported.

The ship “Rhosus” was docked at the port of Beirut six years ago because of an adventure, and it was on its way to Africa with 2,750 tonnes of ammonium fertilizer, the Lebanese media house LBCI reported, without revealing whose ownership is the ship in question.
