Opposition party leader Vetevendosje Albin Kurti has been addressed with an open letter to foreign ambassadors in Kosovo, where he has asked them to help Kosovo and its health institutions in combating pandemic with Avid-19.
In his letter, Kurti has complained to ambassadors that the current government is not doing enough in fighting pandemic, while adding that in autumn and winter Kosovo could face humanitarian crisis.
Kurti has taken the opportunity to address foreign ambassadors for assistance, although it already represents only the chairman of an opposition party in the country, Periscope follows.
Kurti's complete letter:
Noble and noble.
Ambassadors to the friendly countries and Kosovo partners, honoured diplomats.
Kosovo is honored to have partners in your countries. You have stood by our side in the most difficult of times.
Our societies share the common values of freedom and democracy, but similar interests for the economic strengthening of the region and ensuring lasting peace and prosperity for all.
With this story and common values in mind, as the leader of the largest political party in Kosovo, as the most voted politician, as an activist and concerned citizen of this poor but stable country, I appeal that in these difficult and unprecedented times you help our health institutions cope with the COVID-19 for the lives of people.
As you may know, the situation with COVID-19 in the past two months has become dramatic. So far 341 people have died, 10,419 have been infected, and 4,020 are active cases. In the last two weeks, we have had an average of ten deaths a day, ranking Kosovo first in the world for the number of deaths from COVID-19 per million.
On a daily basis, we have hundreds of positive cases where more than 50% of tested persons result in positive. Given that the government has drastically reduced contact tracking, the number of infected people is much higher that poses even greater risk if more people need hospitalization. The technical and human resources of health care institutions have been exhausted, while hospitals no longer have accommodation capacity. All Intensive Care Units are busy while doctors, specialists, and nurses work day and night under extreme pressure and stress. More than 1,000 health - care workers have been infected, showing the need for more medical staff.
The essential medical supplies needed to combat COVID-19 are running out, and if this dramatic situation continues, there will soon not be enough oxygen to save patients. With scientists predicting an increase in infections in the autumn and winter season, the situation will deteriorate further by causing a humanitarian catastrophe.
Honored ambassadors, honourable diplomats, I am aware that the current health and economic crisis is global and that your countries are also struggling with the effects of pandemic on people and the economy.
But Kosovo is in serious condition.
As leader of the opposition, it is my duty to hold the current government accountable, even in times of national emergency. I regret that we do not have a government that acts with responsibility and professionalism, that listens to scientists and experts and enjoys trust and credibility among citizens. The virus itself is not a government act, but failure to act responsibly is a direct result of its inability, which put the whole country at risk.
In this extremely heavy situation, I cannot remain calm until I see a health crisis becoming a humanitarian, threatening the lives of thousands of Kosovo citizens.
Ambassadors and honoured diplomats, I have expressed these views with you many times at our meetings. Now, on behalf of the people of Kosovo, I publicly ask you and your countries to provide Kosovo health care institutions with necessary medical equipment and human resources to enable a health crisis to turn into a humanitarian catastrophe.
Honestly,
Albin Kurti
Speaker of Movement V EVIDENCE!
