Albania ranks third in the world for cocaine use, at the same levels as Australia and Canada, according to the updated map of the 2020 World Drug Report, a publication of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Albania has dropped to third place, down from the first two years ago, as updated data has climbed to the top of the users of Great Britain and later the United States of America.
According to published data, which is still referring to Albania in 2014, the presumption of cocaine use for 15-64 years, which measures the percentage of people who have consumed it at least once, is 2.5 percent.
Great Britain, with up-to-date data on 2018, has a rate of 2.92 percent, while the United States has this index of 2.6 percent.
For cannabis, Albania, although one of the leading producers, is an average user, with a 5.4 per cent prevalence. The highest consumption in the region is in Macedonia at 6.6 percent, while in Europe the record is held by France, Italy, Spain from 10 percent to 11 percent. In the world, the record for use of cannabis holds Israel 27 percent, followed by the US at 19.4 percent.
For the use of other drugs, such as amphithymine, ecstasy, our country has a minimum consumption, while the world record holds the Netherlands.
One product, where Albania ranks as relatively high users, is that of calmers and Sedivists, with an 8.5 percent interval. In fact, all of Central and Eastern Europe has a high consumption of sedatives, where Czechia holds the record at 19.5 percent and Croatia at 17.4 percent. In the U.S., the prevalence of soothing use is 2.9 percent.
The report says that drug use worldwide has been on the rise in the overall number and weight of the world's drug use population. In 2009, there were 210 million estimated users, representing 4.8 percent of the global population of 15-64, compared to 269 million users estimated at 2018, or 5.3 percent of the population.
Cannabis is the most used substance. Some 192 million people used cannabis in 2018, making drugs more consumed worldwide.
The same report specified that Albania and the Netherlands are the two main countries in Europe most frequently mentioned in 2014-2018 as countries of origin, departure and the transit of cannabis grass. According to the report, the analysis of direct and indirect data for the 2010 2018 period tells of a number of countries likely to have significant cannabis cultivation in relation to other states in the same region and subregion. For Southeast Europe, only Albania is still mentioned. The Netherlands, Italy, Great Britain, Spain, and Belgium are mentioned in Western Europe.
While for cannabis resin (substance extracted after expecting cannabis), Albania ranks sixth in the world for the same period, ranking key states of cannabis resin origin, according to reports by member states for 2014-2018. Albania ranks after Morocco, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebanon and Iran, while ahead of Holland and Spain. This ranking is based on the number of cases mentioned on an annual questionnaire the United Nations Office has done with 68 countries. /Monitor/
