With 95% of the votes counted by Monday morning, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) appears to be taking 66 out of 151 seats in parliament, following elections that took place right at the time of increased corruption cases.
The HDZ is expected to form a ruling coalition with a number of smaller parties, which will offer the prime minister, Andrej Plenkovic, a second term in office, writes Guardian, Perskopi.
Plenkovic, speaking during the last evening, said the result was <x0-winner” but also came with obligations.
The “is a duty because we had a difficult mandate with full challenges, and the challenges we have ahead are even greater,” he said.
According to polls, HDZ would come out in the elections quite close to the Social Democrat Party, but in fact it did not. The PSD won only 41 seats in parliament.
HDZ presidential candidate Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic was defeated in January by PSD-backed challenger Zoran Milanovic.
The HDZ is part of the European People's parties, and a number of politicians from other parties had appeared in the group, giving support to this party. Part of this party block is the LDK in Kosovo.
Part of these politicians were Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansha, and so were Von der Leyeen. /Periscope
