The German government alleged that a member of the Russian Army's GRU intelligence service was involved in a hacker attack on the Bundestag IT network in May 2015. That is why the government has proposed joint sanctions against Moscow on its European Union partners”, German news agency DPA reports.
Germany is calling for imposing sanctions, citing the framework of the Council of the European Union 2017, which allows the deployment of measures to prevent cyber attacks.
A European Union spokesman said member states could submit proposals for sanctions, which then must be unanimously established by the European Union Council.
The Prosecutor General's Office in Karlsruhe filed an indictment in early May against Russian citizens Dmitry Badin, under suspicion of attacking the Bundestag information network as a member of a group of hackers.
In that case, it is assumed that a large amount of data -- primarily e-mail from MPs -- was transferred to a server abroad.
